Poultry farmers groups supported by OSA Ishiara parish project have been undergoing a lot of challenges in management of the Poultry since distribution in the year 2017. This has affected the outcome of this intervention negatively. Some of the challenges encountered by farmers are Poultry diseases, expensive Poultry feeds from the agrovet outlets and deaths of some of their chicken. These have been the main causes of low outputs.
In june 2018 review, the farmers reported the challenges above as impendments to their progress. During the review, it also came out well that some members have not taken any action towards solving the challenges they have been encountering. This was noted as risk to the sustainability of poultry project. OSA Ishiara parish in an attempt to address the challenges and come up with a sustainable approach that will help the farmers reap from their interventions, organised a meeting with all poultry group members.
The objectives of these meeting was to ensure that each member highlights their individual challenges and suggest what actions to undertake and make individual commitment as to when they will solve their challenges. They also were to commit how to mitigate the effects of some of the challenges they undergo in poultry production.
Each beneficiary with poultry intervention, was trained on poultry production, housing and disease management. In addition, they received a cock and 4 hens. As a way to boost their production, representatives from across all the groups were trained on making a chicken rations for the layers by CARLO Muguga in order to reduce the cost of production and by using the locally available resources.
Despite these approaches, there have been little progress made in the last 9 months of implementing poultry group intervention. OSA felt that there is need for a planning meeting with poultry group farmers so that some progress is achieved.
