MISEAN CARA
OSA-Ishiara parish partnership with Misean Cara begun in the year 2016 through a livelihood project known as Water for food security that mainly aims at improving the food and economic security through provision of water for small holder irrigation and community capacity building on climate sensitive agriculture to community members.
TROCAIRE
OSA –Ishiara parsih coordination with Trocaire dates back 1996 where Trocaire supported the drought hit community through the parish by provision of funds for relief intervention. The funds were used to procure food items for the drought affected community mainly maize, beans and cooking oil. Since then Trócaire would support the parish in times of drought crises mainly relief intervention until 2007 when a further need to invest in livelihoods protection and strengthening (Community resilience projects) was felt because of the following:-
i. The rains had become more erratic, unpredictable and unreliable while the local community was becoming more over dependent on the rain fed agriculture.
ii. Livestock keeping had become uneconomic due to inadequate pasture resulting to poor health conditions thus to poor market price in the local market.
iii. Difficulties in responding to environmental related shocks by community members
iv. Adoption of negative coping mechanisms to their livelihoods such as uncontrolled charcoal burning, and sandharvesting which all have adverse effects to the environment contributing to its degradation.
Since then various projects have been implemented:
Goats Restocking Programme implemented from 2007-2011
Arid and Semi-arid project (ARP) 2012-2015 that aimed at improving the livelihood security and resilience to drought in Ishiara parish (Evurore division) of Mbeere North district, Embu County.
Community resilience and climate change adaptation –Implemented with funding from Department of international development (DFID) that aims at ensuring that Vulnerable HH in the drought affected semi-arid areas have improved economic security. key focus being on diversified livelihoods options, access to markets, saving and lending. Specific activities are farmer groups and collective marketing, Savings and lending committee (SILC).
Order of St. Augustine –OSA (Ishiara parish) in partnership with Trocaire with funding from from Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom and Misean Cara is implementing a Community resilience and climate change adaptation project in Embu county specifically in Evurore ward mainly focusing in three locations (Kamarandi, Ndurumori and Iria tune locations). The title of the project is Community resilience and climate change adaptation aimed at ensuring that the Vulnerable communities in the drought-affected semi-arid Evurore ward are more resilient to the impact of shocks and stresses related to climate change. The three year project aims at reaching 4000 households and attain four major outcomes within the project period which are inclusive of :improved levels of economic security, improved levels of food security, improved capacity to protect and manage natural resources in a climate sensitive manner and Improved capacity to plan for, respond to and cope with shocks and stresses related to climate change. Good progress towards attaining the set milestones have been made as far as the project out puts are concerned and so in the next quarters efforts to achieve the project outcomes will be made.
